What You’ll Actually Need Once You’re Home with Baby

Oct 07, 2025

There are so many checklists and blogs out there about what to pack for your hospital or birth centre bag. But what about when you walk through the door at home with your new little love?

That’s when the real recovery begins, and having a few essentials on hand can make such a difference to your comfort and wellbeing. Here are some of my go-to recommendations:

Comfy Clothing

You’ll want clothes that feel soft, stretchy, and easy to wear. Elastic waist pants, maternity bras, and tops that make breastfeeding easy are lifesavers in those early days. The Betty Basics range is one of my favourites, their pants are next-level comfy and perfect for lounging or feeding.

Water, Water, Water 💧

Hydration is everything when you’re recovering, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Keep a big water bottle nearby at all times (bonus points if it has a straw for one-handed sipping). Sometimes plain water doesn’t quite cut it. Electrolytes are an easy way to boost hydration and energy. We stock Mammas Milk Bar and Two Islands options that taste great and give you that extra lift.

Snacks (Lots of Them!)

You’ll quickly discover that eating with one hand is a new skill you’ll master. Quick, easy-to-grab snacks are a must. If you’re after lactation support, Lila Jasmine Bars and The Lactation Station Cookies are super handy to have nearby. But honestly, any snack that fuels you and keeps you going is perfect. Think muesli bars, crackers, or even a stash of chocolate.

Relief for 'Down There'

Every birth is different, and so is every recovery. Some mamas find extra support helpful, like:

We love the Viva la Vulva and Breastmates ranges, they’ve got some amazing products designed just for this stage.

Breastfeeding Must-Haves

For breastfeeding mamas, I can’t recommend breast pads enough. Ours are one of the most highly rated products we stock. They're super absorbent, soft, and such a practical little lifesaver.

Let People Help

This might be the most important thing on the list: say YES when someone offers to help. And if they ask what you need, don’t be shy – snacks, meals, or even a hot choccy (that you can actually drink while it’s still warm!) go a long way. Food really is a love language, and fuelling your body is key to recovery.

A Kindle (or Your Favourite Book)

Middle of the night feeds can feel long, and sometimes you need a little something to keep you awake. My Kindle was my best friend – so easy to use one-handed, and it made those quiet moments feel just a little more special.

💛 At the end of the day, the goal is to rest, recover, and make sure you’re looking after yourself while caring for your new baby. A few thoughtful essentials can make the transition home a little smoother – and a lot more comfortable.
