Getting Started with Cloth Nappies - Sizing & Absorbency

Getting the right fit and the right absorbency can be a bit tricky.  Here we simplify it for you.  Check out the video below or scroll down to read a summary if you prefer.

Our most popular cloth nappies are our One Size Fits Most (OSFM) and that means we say they should fit from about 6 weeks onwards, but we have had babies as young as 4 days old in them, so it’s very baby dependent.

They are fully adjustable – all the domes mean that you can size them to fit your bub.  The largest setting still fits my 3 and 4 year olds, so they will last you a long time.  For a tiny baby, you’re going to have to do some resizing.

There is a row of domes in the middle that can dome down to make the length smaller.  You can then dome the top domes for the waist to be the right size.  Check out the video if you want to see exactly what I mean.

To get the right fit you’re going to want the leg hole to be reasonably tight, and put it right up in the crease like we would wear undies.  The waist, however, you want to be comfortable.  Make sure you can get a couple of fingers in there and ensure there’s no muffin top.

As for absorbency, all our nappies come with a 4-layer microfibre insert which goes into the pocket in the back.  This may be plenty, however if you need extra absorbency, you’ll add a bamboo insert (or hemp) in behind the microfibre.  You want the microfibre to be at the top as it absorbs quickly and then slowly leaks into the bamboo.
